Stockton Beach

Description

Stockton Beach is a fairly secluded beach 120km (75mi) North of Sydney, near Newcastle. It is a long, sandy beach famous for its desert like sand dunes. The beach is open to 4WD and recreational vehicles with a beach driving permit. Stockton Beach is an ocean surf beach, the middle of which faces South-East. Access to the Sygna wreck section of the beach is via 4wd vehicle, tour or walking around 6km North from the town of Stockton.

Name

Most likely named for a town in England that received attention in 1825 with the opening of the Darlington - Stockton rail line, a world first. May also be derived from Scott's Town, for a large land owner of the time, Alexander Walter Scott.

4wd Beach Driving - is popular on Stockton Beach. Access is via Lavis Lane in the South, near Williamtown, or Anna Bay to the North, near Port Stephens. The Lavis Lane entry can be tricky with soft sand and large dunes to cross, the Anna Bay entrance is straight onto the beach.

A beach driving permit is required, available from nearby service stations. 3 day passes are $10, while a year pass is $30.
You need to let your tires down when driving on sand, a good starting point is between 16-18 PSI.

Surf Fishing - is common from the shore at Stockton, especially around the wreck area. Towards Christmas and into summer good catches of whiting, flathead, tailor and jewfish are likely, while Autumn and Winter is very good for catches of Tailor and Salmon.
Beach Camping is permitted within 100 meters of the high tide line. Fires on the beach are permitted, as long as there is not a Total Fire Ban in place.
