Description

Wategos Beach is a 300 metre strip of sand between two reefy headlands. It curves sharply northeast, the middle of the beach faces northwest, exposed to the Pacific Ocean.
Its is an ocean surf beach, surrounded by bushland and a semi-residential area.

Location

Wategos is on the northern end of Cape Byron, 1.5 kms northeast from the township of Byron Bay, Northern NSW.
Cape Byron is the most easterly point on the Australian mainland.

Highlights

Wategos is a quality surfbreak in the right conditions. It is also a great place to have a bbq at sunset after a hard afternoon of surfing.

Name

Named after the Watego family, who grew Bananas and vegetables in the area.
Cape Byron was named by Captain James Cook, in honour of John Byron. Byron was an explorer who circumnavigated the globe in less than 2 years, along the way taking possession of the Falkland Islands for Britain. He is also the the grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.
