Description

Holloways Beach is appox 2km long sandy beach, running southeast-northwest. The middle of the beach faces east.
Holloways is a tropical beach, protected from ocean swell by the Great Barrier Reef, but still affected by wind.
Holloways beach is surrounded by tropical vegetation including Palm Trees, and a residential area.

Location

Holloways Beach is appox 20Km north of Cairns. It is accessible by car or public transport (Bus).
The middle of the beach faces east towards the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. South is Machans beach while North is Yorkeys Knob. To the west is the suburb of Holloways Beach.

Name

Named after Richard Holloway, who farmed land in this area in 1926.

Highlights

As Cairns city has no natural sandy beaches, the beaches north are popular with tourists and locals.
Holloways has a couple of good restaurants with beach views, including Coolums. There is also affordable accomodation available at Cairns Beach Resort.

Beach is patrolled during Stinger Season, typically from November to May each year.
There are a couple of picnic areas along the beach, with electric BBQs
Boat Ramp in Acacia St on river side. River access to ocean. Unknown if passable in low tide.

There are at least 2 restaurants in this block right on the beach, including Coolums.
Cairns Beach Resort has good value accomodation right on the beach.
The beaches north of Cairns are all great for sunbaking and swimming.
There is a stinger enclosure here during November to May.
Kitesurfing is popular on this beach.
