Cronulla Beach

Description

Cronulla beach is one of a series of beaches that curve for around 4km along Bate Bay. Cronulla Beach is fairly small, around 300 metres from corner to corner. The middle of the beach faces due East and is exposed to the Pacific Ocean, but is protected from southerly swell and winds by Bate Bay headland. The back beach is a grassy park with picnic tables, beyond that shops and apartments.
It is a sandy beach, the sand is a nice golden colour and usually clean. Cronulla Beach is an ocean surf beach, affected by wind, swell, and tides.

Location

Cronulla Beach is around 20 km south of Sydney, in the state of NSW, Australia. Climatic zone is temperate. It is a suburban beach surrounded by parks, shops, houses and roads. It can be accessed by car or public transport or by walking along the Esplanade walking track.

Name

The name Cronulla is derived from the local Gweagal Aboriginal word kurranulla, which translates to "beach with the pink seashells."

Sunbathing is popular at this beach. It can become crowded here at peak times, but there is always room at the beaches further North. The sand is soft and usually clean.
This beach is protected from southerly swells and wind and is therefore usually calmer and cleaner than surrounding beaches. For this reason it is popular with families and swimmers looking for a safer place to swim.
Surf is fairly consistent at Cronulla. Exposed beach break, a little more protected here than further north. Works best in SE swells and westerly winds.
Surf fishing from the sand is usually not as good as some as the beaches to the North like Elouera and Wanda. Fishing from the rock platforms South and North from the beach is good, with tailor, flathead and bream caught.
This area has a great walking and jogging track system. From Cronulla beach it is possible to walk north all the way to Boat Harbour, 4kms north, although the paved track ends at Wanda beach and its pretty much sandy beach from there. South you can follow the paved path all the way to the tip of Bate Bay, past around 1 km of great coastal scenery.
